Micro-CT imaging of surgical screw tightening in human trabecular bone
نویسنده
چکیده
Aims Bone fracture fixation in orthopaedic surgery occurs with the use of implants, such as bone screws. Screws are tightened, typically manually, with the level of tightening depending on surgeons’ manual feel. However, this subjective insertion torque control can lead to overtighening and screw stripping 1 . Previously our group has shown that stripping torque can be predicted based on the torque measured at screw head contact 2 . The question remains however, “how much tightening should be applied?”, particularly in trabecular bone.

Tightening force and torque of nonlocking screws in a reverse shoulder prosthesis.
BACKGROUND Reversed shoulder arthroplasty is an accepted treatment for glenohumeral arthritis associated to rotator cuff deficiency. For most reversed shoulder prostheses, the baseplate of the glenoid component is uncemented and its primary stability is provided by a central peg and peripheral screws. Because of the importance of the primary stability for a good osteo-integration of the basepla...
متن کاملTrabecular deformations during screw pull-out: a micro-CT study of lapine bone
The mechanical fixation of endosseous implants, such as screws, in trabecular bone is challenging because of the complex porous microstructure. Development of new screw designs to improve fracture fixation, especially in high-porosity osteoporotic bone, requires a profound understanding of how the structural system implant/trabeculae interacts when it is subjected to mechanical load. In this st...

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the trabecular bone microarchitecture and cortical bone morphology by using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and dental cone-beam computed tomography (dental CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen femurs and eight fifth lumbar vertebrae were collected from eight male Sprague Dawley rats. Four trabecular bone microa...
متن کاملMandibular Trabecular Bone Analysis Using Local Binary Pattern for Osteoporosis Diagnosis
Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Since Panoramic image is a feasible and relatively routine imaging technique in dentistry; it could provide an opportunistic chance for screening osteoporosis. In this regard, numerous...
متن کاملAge-Related Changes in Trabecular and Cortical Bone Microstructure
The elderly population has substantially increased worldwide. Aging is a complex process, and the effects of aging are myriad and insidious, leading to progressive deterioration of various organs, including the skeleton. Age-related bone loss and resultant osteoporosis in the elderly population increase the risk for fractures and morbidity. Osteoporosis is one of the most common conditions asso...
